    Biography

    The gentleman of the South African music business and an exuberant stage, radio and TV personality, won his first singing-talent contest in Margate at the age of 9.

    Born in Germiston, he took piano lessons during his teens and joined the SABC as an operations assistant in 1954. After work, he sang in various Johannesburg night clubs (see Billy Forrest), fronting dance combos.

    He spent the period between 1959 and 1961 in London singing with Group 1 and appearing on British TV, On returning to SA he continued to sing with the orchestras of Dan Hill, Sam Sklair, Werner Krupski and Ralph Baleson. In 1959 Lance James made his debut stage appearance in the Bertha Egnos - Gail Lakier musical, "Bo-Jungle".

    In 1964, Lance James returned to the SABC to work as a music compiler and supplemented his living by making records.

    Lance James has presented the Musical Moneybox and, since 1976, his "Keep It Country" shows on Springbok Radio.
