Sarat Chandra was born on 15 September in Debanandapur, a village in Hooghly district, West Bengal, India.
He was the second son of Motilal Chattopadhyay and Bhagwati Devi. Sarat Chandra grew up in poverty and had to face many challenges in his childhood. Despite this, he was a bright student and was able to obtain a scholarship to study at the Metropolitan Institution in Kolkata.
